Freedom Indiana is a 501(c)(4) created to update Indiana’s civil rights law to provide for fairness and equal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Hoosiers in the workplace, housing and business services. Regional Field Organizers are responsible for specific legislative districts, in which they will live and work. Regional Field Organizers are responsible for mobilizing key grasstops constituents from targeted districts to make nuanced and repeated contact with their members. The ideal candidate will have a background in volunteer development and management, a demonstrated ability to achieve specific metrics and goals, and experience with political and/or issue advocacy campaigns utilizing grassroots and grasstops techniques. The position is funded for six months or until 10 days after passage or defeat of a comprehensive LGBT nondiscrimination law in Indiana, whichever is sooner.
Regional Field Organizers will work with their Deputy Campaign Manager to identify and activate diverse networks of key volunteers in targeted districts. Organizers will utilize this network of volunteers to generate a high volume of high-quality contact to specific legislators utilizing individualized field plans in an attempt to secure votes on a piece of legislation.
Specifically, Regional Field Organizers will:
- Implement a quality-oriented grasstops contact program
- Work cooperatively with Freedom Indiana campaign staff
- Manage day-to-day operations of volunteer activity
- Track metrics to measure progress toward defined programmatic goals
- Coordinate and provide necessary reports to Deputy Campaign Manager on a regular basis
- Build relationships with key community leaders within targeted districts
- Track and report political information learned from programmatic activities
- Support program events and other staff as necessary
We seek a motivated candidate with a strong background in metrics-based organizing and volunteer management, as well as a knowledge of and commitment to equality for LGBT people. They must be independent and easily adapt to a fast-paced environment. This person must be flexible, adaptable, resourceful and creative.
This person will have demonstrated capability of managing successful volunteer programs to achieve specific measurable outcomes within designated time frames and will be able to coordinate complex programs. Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience to manage multiple goals simultaneously.
The successful candidate will have significant issue/candidate field organizing experience. Candidates must have the demonstrated ability and desire to work with bipartisan organizations and volunteer constituencies, including engaging a significant conservative volunteer and staff base. Experience working within the LGBT community strongly preferred. Extensive experience managing the Voter Activation Network (VAN) is strongly preferred.
Qualified individuals will bring a minimum of one year’s experience in grassroots organizing and/or a minimum of one cycle of political organizing in a staff role, or equivalent experience. Candidates will also have the ability to maintain flexible work hours including weekends and evening hours, and to travel in-state infrequently.
